"Finding Your Niche" by Ginger Marks

I read this in an Ezine I receive and thought it might be useful to
some of you out there!

Finding Your Niche

As a woman this seems to be one of the hardest things to resolve.
I say this because we as women are so used to multi-tasking that
I believe we have a difficult time honing in on just one area.
We try to have our hands in many pots all at the same time. Feed
the children, while reading a book, while answering the phone,
while… well you get the picture. It just comes naturally. This
habit tends to overflow into our work and business lives.
Sure multitasking is important. However, when deciding on your
target market we would benefit greatly from a little less
diversity.

I am not saying you can't or shouldn't have more than one
business. What I am expressing to you is that if you ultimately
choose to have more than one – make sure they compliment each
other. For example, if you market promotional products you
might expand by including greeting cards, but you might find
it quite distracting to launch a new business offering an
event planning service.

Just what is a niche and how do you set about deciding on one?
Niche is described in Merriam-Webster as: “A place, employment,
status, or activity for which a person or thing is best
fitted.” The take away here is that you must narrow down your
potential customer base. Decide who would benefit most from
your product or service. Then take into consideration what
would effectively stimulate them to take the necessary action
to effectively move from prospect to customer.

The first thing you should decide is what is your overall
target market's general makeup? Are you anticipating
attracting a mostly male dominated corporate clientele, women
owned, or mom & pop startup enterprises? Once this decision
is made move on to the next deeper level. If your answer is
that what you have to offer is most appealing to a decidedly
female audience don't stop there. Consider their age, marital
status, and are they mothers or not? Anything that could
profoundly affect how you successfully market your business
should be taken into account. Keep digging until you come
to the bottom. That is your niche.

Once you clearly determine who your target market is, it
is time to begin figuring out what compels them. More than
likely this will not only help you determine how to
successfully market to them but additionally what inventory
you’ll need to have on hand. If you are in the service
arena what services to offer would be quickly discovered.

One powerful research tool that I have found extremely helpful
in this area is a simple survey. These can be created online
or off. I have recently discovered that surveys that enable
you to not only see the overall results but the individual
response can be much more beneficial than a simple graph
resultant survey. Allow your responders to leave comments
after the question when applicable. If you don't already have
a survey application contact me and I will be happy to share
the one I use with you. They offer a free and a paid
subscription depending on your needs.

When compiling your survey be sure to keep it simple for
your survey takers. Use questions that not only list the
question but choices too. Be sure to include the option
of “other” if you wish to really know how they feel about
an issue. Don’t use just true and false questions. These
will suffice for certain areas but the multiple choice
questions can offer a better understanding of your
respondents and therefore a deeper understanding of
their needs. Also allowing them to select all that apply
instead of just one will further clarify their needs.

Once you get started I am sure you will uncover additional
means to assist you in recognizing your niche. Remember the
more specific you are when determining who your potential
customer is the easier it will be to decipher out what it
will take to turn them into customers.

What's New?

It's been a long summer and I'm glad the Autumn has begun to move in on the East coast. The Merry Bird has been busy working on new ideas this past summer to drive
online business further than just a cyberspace gallery of work to view. New equipment is being sought after to create a stronger online environment and a more
creative atmosphere. By the end of this year The Merry Bird will have new
services and an easier shopping experience for customers like you!

A portion of The Merry Bird...pen, ink and design Holiday collection has been put
up for view at www.themerrybird.com ---I'm thrilled to say they are adorable cards that will make anyone feel warm around the holidays. Please fly by and take a peek!

Marketing The Merry Bird has been a unique task. Online businesses take extra time and effort to market since you must touch as many online people, businesses and groups as possible while maintaining a presence in the offline community. Someday this won't be an issue, as online businesses will need only to advertise the online business address.

Are you the Creator?

You Are Somewhat Machiavellian

You're not going to mow over everyone to get ahead...
But you're also powerful enough to make things happen for yourself.
You understand how the world works, even when it's an ugly place.
You just don't get ugly yourself - unless you have to!

Fly!

A new high point for the Merry Bird has just been added to the website. Meet Merry
the flying bird! http://www.themerrybird.com Please see the Home Page.

This new addition to The Merry Bird site, brought me to a new thought, the importance of a logo.

How many business' are running out there that cannot capture the feeling of a customer? There may be nothing wrong with the products, or the business itself. It may be the logo that needs help.

For example, why do you think NIKE is such a successful brand? The logo is known world wide. You may not even see the logo on a sneaker. You may see it on a shirt or sport bag, but wherever you see it, you always know that the company represented is NIKE.

Another part of the NIKE logo that made it successful is the well known caption put with it... "Just do it". One powerful logo and it's caption remains today one of the most powerful tools in selling the NIKE product line. Isn't it great that I just used this logo as an example of a powerful selling tool and advertised for the company free as well? LOL

Wouldn't it be something if your company logo kicked ass this way? The question remains, how do businesses capture customers? First have a memorable logo for the company, second, have a logo caption that calls them to purchase from the company, and third have a logo that reminds them the company is there for them anytime.

Hence, the importance of a logo. Now does your company logo reach people this way? What makes it powerful? What makes it weak? How do people respond to it overall?

Have some comfort in knowing you're not alone, The Merry Bird... is flying around out there to find out what works best too! Let's Fly!

Christmas in July

Christmas in July? I never liked the idea.

Somehow the rush to purchase a gift just for the sake of purchasing a gift is losing momentum in my heart. What happened to the days when the snow would fall and you'd whistle "Winter Wonderland"?
Or the month before Christmas you and the kids would get excited about Santa coming, have hot chocolate by the fire while listening to classic holiday tunes, oh don't forget hanging your stocking! Even my Jewish friends used get excited about the season of holly.

It seems long gone are the lazy days of holiday relaxation and cheer. The focus is on expensive gift giving and giving "things". Today, there are many reasons people tend to shop for gifts so early in the season, one is because everything is so expensive. With the need to get "everyone" a gift for the holiday, we put ourselves to a money, crunch test in late November. It is spending in the absurd sense, hence shopping in July. Quality items are more expensive and time is of the essence, who relaxes? Is it possible to make your children smile about what's under the tree, have the hubby like his new "toyl" (oops, tool) and mom can sit back with a happy grin knowing family, as well as friends are happy? Yes, if you shop in July! I never said I liked it, but many people have reduced themselves to this frame of thought with regards to holiday gift giving.

In a world where everything is technical, video-game or tv oriented, shopping for our children and family has become much more expensive then it ever has been in the past. The classic car or doll doesn't quite cut it, and if it does, the "incredible feeling" your child has with the car or doll only lasts for a short time. So what am I thinking? It's sad, but some "force" in society is moving people away from the sentimental, spiritual and exciting sense the holiday season, and leading us all to buy "expensive things". It's our responsibility to show the next generation, that although things and expensive gifts are quite nice to receive, holiday time is a time of reflection of spiritual sense, family, good will and happy times.

Now being in business, consumers are important to me. Everyone needs to purchase something at some point or another. The Merry Bird...pen, ink and design holiday cards (I know holiday cards are on your list too!) may be one step that is a quality way to turn the tides of society's "force" to purchase or spend frivolously, into a sentimental note that says, I love you and thought of you this holiday season. Simple holiday cards make any holiday complete. How about shopping for your holiday cards this July? www.themerrybird.com

2. - Celebrating Christmas in July is not a new idea but I'd love for you to stop by and view my holiday card collection at www.themerrybird.com. Collection to be Featured by the end of July 2006!

3. - And..... another place you can spot The Merry Bird... is at the S.O.C. site...(Send Out Cards)
I would be delighted if you chose one of my pen and ink, printed cards to make a friend or colleague smile!

The Merry Bird...

POSTCARDS!
Summer 2006

Have you gone on vacation recently? Maybe, maybe not..... but who needs
to go on vacation to send a postcard? Postcards are purely to send a vision, a moment to your friends and relatives, a hug from the distance, a card to say "I'm thinking of you and want you to know it".

The Merry Bird...pen, ink and design, is featuring it's newest item this summer 2006, the photo Postcard!

Of course, postcards arouse the nostalgia of the place you're visiting or perhaps just to show
your home town. A postcard can be anything you want it to be. It can evoke feelings of Summer, a timeless moment or a mark in history.
